• John is played with bits off comic traits from him. Namely language and details regarding his family life. The show touched on it, but comics are used to flesh it out.
• John will NOT be canon updated to Legends of Tomorrow. Thus, any future character development is going to be based on the comics.
• John has substance abuse as a natural part of his character (smoking, alcohol, previous drug use).

CAN JOHN USE MAGIC AROUND/ON YOUR CHARACTER?: Absolutely yes, with a note that mental manipulation magic will work with notable efficacy, and Gil will be extra mad about it being used on him.
WHAT MAGIC DOES NOT NATURALLY WORK ON YOUR CHARACTER? Everything works with regular expectations, but Gil can also replenish his own strength to some degree, so that might come across as a false positive to affect him.
WHAT SUBJECTS ARE A HARD "NO" FOR YOUR CHARACTER/YOU? Nothing in particular, but warnings if something extra hard is gonna come up will be appreciated!

As an aside as well, if John can see through illusionary magic he'll be able to see Gil's true form beneath his human Mask!
